CanSpell National Spelling Bee
Encyclopedia : C : CA : CAN : CanSpell National Spelling Bee
- "Canadian Spelling Bee" redirects here. The Spelling Bee of Canada, founded 1987, is a separate competition.
As of 2006, regional finals are held in fourteen Canadian cities from Victoria to St. John's. The winner and runner-up in each regional final participate in the national final in Ottawa, and all regional winners also qualify for the Scripps bee.
The CanSpell finals are not currently televised live, but nonetheless enjoy significant coverage from CanWest-owned media outlets. Also, a documentary on the event was produced last year and aired on CanWest's Global Television Network. This year's event had just a shortening of the actual competition.
In addition to all CanWest dailies (except The Province), newspaper sponsors include the Winnipeg Free Press, The Telegram in St. John's, The Daily News in Halifax, and The Guardian in Charlottetown. The Saturn brand of General Motors is the presenting sponsor.
