Canadian Club

Encyclopedia : C : CA : CAN : Canadian Club

Canadian Club is a brand of whisky from Canada.

History

Originally known as "Walker's Club Whisky," it began production in 1858, and to this day the bottles display that year on the label. The distillery was built in Walkerville, Ontario (now part of Windsor) by American Hiram Walker.

Canadian Club whiskey has received the Royal Warrants of Queen Victoria, King Edward VII, King George V, King George VI, and Queen Elizabeth II. Hiram Walker & Sons was the only North American distiller to have been granted a Royal Warrant.[Getting The Royal Treatment]

Types

Most popular is Canadian Club, the 80-proof (40% alcohol by volume) "base brand" which is what most people think of when ordering a "C.C.", as it is commonly called. This is blended before maturation in white American oak barrels for a minimum of six years. It is sold in more than 150 countries world-wide, more than any other Canadian whisky, and is the top-selling premium Canadian whisky brand outside North America.

Canadian Club 100 Proof is also aged six years in the barrel.

In addition, there is Canadian Club Reserve which is also 80 proof but aged for ten years in small barrels.

Classic 12 is 80 proof and aged twelve years.

82.6-proof Canadian Club Sherry Cask is made in very small quantities from whiskies that have been aged at least eight years in white oak barrels, then double matured in sherry casks imported from Jerez in Spain, hence the name.

Canadian Club is also produced in limited quantities in older agings (15 years and up) for special markets.
