Canterbury Castle

Encyclopedia : C : CA : CAN : Canterbury Castle

Canterbury Castle was established by the Normans, in 1080, and replaced an earlier motte and bailey fortification built at the nearby Dane John. The stone keep was mainly constructed in the reign of Henry I (1100 - 1135) as one of three Royal castles in Kent. By the 13th century the castle had become the county gaol, and by the 19th century it had been obtained by a gas company. It was used as a storage centre for gas for many years, during which time the company attempted to destroy it. This was largely unsuccessful beyond taking off the top floor and removing the interior floors.

Now owned by the local authority, which has opened it up to the public, it is located in Canterbury, in the county Kent, England.
