Canterbury Christ Church University is a university based in Kent.

History

The establishment was founded in 1962 as a Church of England teacher training college. Its higher education qualifications (notably degrees) were conferred by the University of Kent, until it acquired university college status, becoming Canterbury Christ Church University College in 1995. It is now regarded as the largest centre of higher education in Kent for the public services – notably teacher training, policing, health and social care. It was formally granted full university status in July 2005, and adopted its present name 1 August 2005.

Students

At present, the student population is approximately 14,000 (up from several hundred in the 1960s), and includes full-time, part-time, and mature students. There are also 1,000 staff.

Campuses

The University began with the original campus in Canterbury; a few minutes walk from the city centre. Since then, a range of new campuses have been established both within, and outside Canterbury. The Sidney Cooper Gallery hosts art expeditions and provides teaching space for the Department of Art. Hall Place is currently being developed as the University's new Enterprise Centre. Augustine House, is currently undergoing refurbishment.

Outside Canterbury, the University has three other campuses. Broadstairs Campus is a new purpose-built facilty located on the East Kent coast. The Salomons Campus, near Tunbridge Wells, is the home to a large number of postgraduate programmes. The third campus is situated in Chatham, as part of the Universities at Medway partnership. The Medway Campus offers courses in education, health, and policing.
