Encyclopedia : C : CA : CAN : Canton City School District

Nestled in the heart of Stark County, Ohio, the Canton City School District serves nearly 11,000 students living in the City of Canton, Ohio. The Canton City School District is the largest in Stark County and one of the eight largest urban school systems in Ohio. It is also one of the largest employers in Stark County. The district comprises two high schools, two freshman academies, four middle schools, 16 elementary schools and an early childhood kindergarten center. In addition, the district operates an alternative middle school and helps operate two alternative high schools, a Montessori school, a Digital Academy, a publicly sponsored charter arts academy and an educational facility inside a juvenile attention center. The Canton City Schools offer a wide variety of strong academic, vocational, athletic, fine arts and other extracurricular activities. Since 1999, a publicly funded building program, Design for the Future, has propelled the construction of ten new schools - Cedar Elementary, Worley Elementary, Allen Elementary, Gibbs Elementary, Belden Elementary, Summit Elementary, Harter Elementary, McGregor Elementary, Clarendon Elementary and Lehman Middle School. At the High School level, the Canton Timken High School Campus project is nearing completion, including over $35 million in new buildings, site improvement and renovations of existing structures. In addition, renovations/upgrades are being completed for most of the remaining schools (including a $16 million renovation of Canton McKinley High School). A local bond issue provided about 23 percent of the funding. All but three of Canton City Schools active schoolhouses will be new or renovated by the summer of 2008.

Though the Canton City School District is well-known for the athletic achievements of its students, it also has earned success in its primary mission of raising student achievement. Each year since 2002, the Canton City School district has improved upon the academic achievement of it students, successfully improving graduation rates and standardized test scores in spite of sharp increases in numbers of economically disadvantaged students. Severe consequences face the District if it does not meet the federal accountability standards in 2006.
