Encyclopedia : C : CA : CAP : Capanda Dam

The Capanda Dam is a dam of the Kwanza River in Malanje Province, Angola. It is used by the Capanda hydroelectric power plant, and it is an important source of electricity for Angola.

Its construction was administered by the government organ Gamek (Gabinete pelo Aproveitamento do MEdio Kwanza), and carried out by Brazilian and Soviet contractors. From the total cost of 4 billion US dollars, more than 400 million was spent repairing damage incurred due to UNITA's occupation of the area as part of the Angolan Civil War in 1992 and 1999.
