Cape Cobra

Encyclopedia : C : CA : CAP : Cape Cobra

The Cape Cobra (Naja nivea) is a moderately sized cobra inhabiting the arid regions of South Africa. It averages 4 feet in length but may grow to be 6 feet long. The color varies from location to location, and those from the Kalahari are normally yellow with brown speck uniformly all over the body.

The snake produces a very powerful neurotoxin that affects the respiratory system. Without treatment, death is likely. Death normally occurs 2 hours after being bitten, as a result of respiratory failure. The venom is 15 times more potent than that of the monocled cobra. Mortality rate without antivenin is 90% which makes it one of the deadliest in the world. Fortunately, human encounters are rare and those who are bitten are those who handle the snake. The snake is quick to strike and becomes aggressive if cornered. Its main predators are various species of raptors inhabiting the area and the honey badger, or ratel.
