Car tuning

Encyclopedia : C : CA : CAR : Car tuning

Car tuning is both an industry and a popular hobby, in which a car is tuned or modified in order to improve its performance.

Car tuning is related to auto racing, but most performance cars never compete. Rather they are built for display at motor shows and club meetings, or just for the pleasure of owning and driving such a vehicle.

The focus of many car tuners is the engine (see engine tuning), but the transmission, suspension and brakes are equally important, otherwise the results will be unreliable, uncompetitive, and downright dangerous.

On the other hand, in a well-developed performance car even the bodywork receives the same tender loving care as the engine and other mechanicals.

A simple formula to calculate the 0-100 km/h time of a car is [m/P=t], where m is the weight of the car in kilograms, P the power of the engine in horsepowers and t the time in seconds. In most cases the results are quite accurate, but it is more a rule of thumb than a scientific formula.
