Cardiff Queen Street railway station
Encyclopedia : C : CA : CAR : Cardiff Queen Street railway station
Cardiff Queen Street railway station (Welsh Caerdydd Heol y Frenhines) is seen by many as the main hub of the Valley Lines network around Cardiff - the solitary connection to Cardiff Bay is seen as part of the reason for this. The station is conveniently located at the eastern end of the city centre, near the Capitol shopping centre, and sees heavy volumes of commuter traffic during the rush hour.
The station itself has three platforms at a level raised above the surrounding roads. Services to the Valleys run from platform 1, and to Cardiff Central and the Vale of Glamorgan from platforms 2 and 3. Platforms 1 and 2 are on a central island, with platform 3 being used mainly for services to Cardiff Bay, and City line services to Radyr. The old station car park is now dedicated for private use by residents of a nearby modern development of apartments known as "The Aspect". The station is staffed at most times, with ticket purchase facilities and a small newsagent on-site. Toilets are found on the island platforms.
In 2005, the station was fitted with new ticket gates, these gates allow easier access going in and out of the station. These gates are operational when the station is manned. In 2006 brand new plasma TV screens were added to this station to replace its old TV screens.
