Carl Robert Jakobson (July 26, 1841 - March 19, 1882) was an Estonian writer and teacher. He was one of the important persons of Estonian national awakening at the second half of 19th century.
Between 1860 and 1880, Estonians were led by a moderate government. Jakobson was the leader of the radical wing. He was responsible for the economic-political program of the Estonian movement. He urged Estonians to demand equal political rights to the nation's Germans and the abolition of the Baltic-German nobility.
In 1878, Jakobson established the Estonian newspaper Sakala. The paper quickly became a vital promoter of the cultural awakening taking place in Estonia.
C.R. Jakobson is depicted on the 500 kroon banknote.
