Carlos Gracie

Carlos Gracie is the founder of the Brazilian martial art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) along with his younger brother Hélio Gracie. He was taught a system of jujutsu and judo by Mitsuyo Maeda, a Japanese emigrant to Brazil and member of the Kodokan. Carlos then passed the teachings on to his brothers Gastão Jr., Jorge and Helio. In 1925, the brothers opened their first academy in Brazil, marking the beginning of art.

Carlos had 21 children, 11 of which earned the rank of black belt in the family's art.
