Carmarthen was a local government district in Dyfed, Wales from 1974 to 1996. It was formed under the Local Government Act 1972 from the former municipal borough of Carmarthen, Newcastle Emlyn urban district, Carmarthen Rural District and Newcastle Emlyn Rural District all in Carmarthenshire. In 1996 it was merged with the districts of Llanelli and Dinefwr to form a new unitary Carmarthenshire.
