- In the Hindi movie Rang De Basanti (2006), Rajnath Singhania (Anupam Kher) asks his son to think about his future and consider universities like Carnegie Mellon University.
- In The West Wing episode "Eppur Si Muove" (Season Five), Ellie Bartlet's diplomas can be found on a wall; the bottom one is a B.S. from Carnegie Mellon. In addition, in "NSF Thurmont" (Season Six), Will Bailey can be found wearing a Carnegie Mellon t-shirt.
- In The Core (2003), Taz 'Rat' Finch (played by DJ Qualls), is an alumnus of Carnegie Mellon.
- In the manga Maico 2010, the main character, an android named Maico, was created at the university.
- In a 1999 episode ("Lovers Walk," Season 3, Episode 8) of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Joyce (Buffy's mother) says to Buffy, "Carnegie Mellon has a wonderful design curriculum."
- In Deep Impact (1998), Dr. Gus Partenza (played by Jon Favreau) is revealed to be an alumnus of Carnegie Mellon.
