Carriacou and Petit Martinique
Encyclopedia : C : CA : CAR : Carriacou and Petit Martinique
Carriacou and Petite Martinique, two of the Grenadines have the status of dependencies of Grenada and together with the island of Grenada, make up the 3 inhabited islands of that nation.
Carriacou is the larger of the 2 islands and the closer to Grenada, with a population of around 1,000. Its capital is Hillsborough in the centre of its western coast.
Petit Martinique (called PM locally) is far smaller, with around 1,000 inhabitants. It is Grenada's northern-most island and is only a 2 minute boat ride from Petit St. Vincent (locally: PSV), the southern most island of the next Caribbean nation, St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The short distance between these 2 islands - which can even be swum by a competent swimmer - and the complete lack of active border patrol mean that it is possible to move between these nations relatively easily - a common problem in the Caribbean.
