"Cartman Joins NAMBLA" is episode 53 of South Park. It originally aired on June 21, 2000.
Synopsis
Cartman decides he is too mature to be with Stan, Kyle, and Kenny, so he decides to look for older male friends in an Internet chat room. He stumbles upon the topic "Men Who Like Young Boys" and decides to talk to some eager men who want to be friends with him. In reality, they are sexually attracted to young boys.Meanwhile, Kenny's parents are trying for another baby. Kenny doesn't like the idea, so throws the ball at his dad's testes while playing catch.
The next day Cartman meets Tony316, who is arrested for soliciting sex from a minor, then, the day after, to Cartman's surprise, "Mr. Hammerhead" turns out to be Mr. Garrison who is also arrested. Cartman, too young and naïve to know what's really going on, concludes that Stan and Kyle are behind this.
Kenny slips abortion pills in his mom's vodka, but his dad accidentally drinks it instead and gets heavy diarrhea. After seeing a commercial for an amusement park ride, informing that pregnant women should not ride, he goes with his parents where Kenny's dad nose is broken. Finally, tired of his failed attempts, Kenny chases his mom through the town with a plunger.
Dr. Mephisto advises Cartman to join NAMBLA, saying "you look about right." Cartman joins and becomes poster boy for the North American Man/Boy Love Association, and a banquet is thrown in his honor with all the boys in town invited.
The police raid a meeting of Dr. Mephisto's organization, but it is a mistake (this group is the North American Marlon Brando Look Alikes, who are not affiliated with the North American Man/Boy Love Association). They rush to stop the other NAMBLA's banquet.
All the boys in town are there; however, when the men take them to their hotel rooms, the boys realize what it really is, and a chase ensues. The NAMBLA men and Mr. McCormick finally end up in a dark room, and they "make love to him in the ass" thinking he's a boy. In the end, all of the NAMBLA people are arrested, and despite their leader's impassioned speech about rights to all people, they're all taken away. Kenny is run over by the ambulance taking his father to the hospital, and afterwards, Mrs. McCormick gives birth to an identical child they name Kenny. According to Mrs. McCormick, this is the 52nd time such has happened. This would explain Kenny's constant reincarnation, as this was arguably the 52nd time Kenny died.
Trivia
- Reportedly, many who viewed this episode and responded to Comedy Central were not aware that NAMBLA (the one that Cartman joins) is an actual organization.
- Cartman's chatroom nickname is BigBoned, referring to his weight problem, but also a play on the word boner.
- The chase scene is a parody of the chase scene cliché established in the Hanna-Barbera cartoon Scooby-Doo, Where are You!. The chase involves the boys of the town, the NAMBLA members, the police, the other NAMBLA (Marlon Brando look-alikes), Kenny, his mom and dad, a French waiter, a poodle on a ball and two men riding penny-farthings.
- Dr. Mephisto's membership in a Marlon Brando look-alike organization is a reference to his character being roughly based on Brando's portrayal of the title character in the movie The Island of Dr. Moreau.
- This is the first episode that the amusement park appears in. It is seen again in multiple episodes, most notably "Cartmanland". Also, the screams heard at the amusement park are the same as in the computer game, Roller Coaster Tycoon.
- The amusement park ride "The John Denver Experience" is a parody of how John Denver actually died.
- Kenny's nightmare is a parody (or homage) of the 1974 horror movie It's Alive.
- The first time Cartman log on to the Internet, he types "Hi everybody! I am a young boy seeking an older male for good times. I am eight years old." The replies he receives are "Hi there!", "Hi!!", "Hello.", "Hey!", "Whassup?", "Howdy!", "Greetings.", and "Hey there, big fella."
- When Cartman logs on to the Internet for the second time, the greetings that he gets are "hello", "how ya doin", "help me", "howdy!", "greetings", "sweet", "helluva", "tits!", "hey!", "say", "how do you do?", "whats new?", "R U reading these?", "get a life", "you're treading a line", "this is gay", and "welcome."
- This is the second time someone has questioned the "I've learnt something today". The head of NAMBLA says he's learnt something, that America's ancestors came to America to escape persecution, pedophiles can't help the way they are, and that it's easier to persecute than understand, to which Stan and Kyle reply "Yea, but you have sex with children" and "Fuck (bleep) you"
- The music played in the background of the North Park Funland commercial is the same as the theme of the Chinpokomon franchise in the episode "Chinpokomon".
- Giving birth to 52 identical Kennys would suggest that it would take a minimum of 39 years.
- *52 Kennys multiplied by 9 months equals 468 months. 468 months divided by 12 months equals 39 years.
- *Alternately, given Kenny is 8 years old in each episode, 416 years have passed (52 Kennys times 8 years).
- Most of Kenny's father's diarrhea and vomiting has been edited out for re-broadcasts.
