Encyclopedia : C : CA : CAS : Cassino, Italy

Cassino is a comune in the province of Frosinone, Italy, at the southern end of the region of Lazio.

Cassino is located at the base of Monte Cairo at the confluence of the Liri and Rapido rivers. Today, it is the site of a FIAT auto plant and the University of Cassino.

Annunciata (Nancy) Beltrame, a Cassino native who now lives in Canada, has proposed a scholarship for the University of Cassino. The scholarship will be in her name, and it is currently in the early stages of development. She graduated from York University (Canada) in 2006, majoring in languages.

The city is most famous for being the site of the Abbey of Montecassino. Many German, British, Polish, French, Italian, and American soldiers died during the fierce omonymous battle (1944) are buried in nearby cemeteries.

History

Before 28 July, 1863, the comune, which arose on the site of the ancient town of Casinum, was called San Germano. Casinum had become a Roman colony in 309 BCE and was the site of a villa belonging to Marcus Terentius Varro.

Cassino was the site of the Battles of Monte Cassino during World War II. The town was largely destroyed during the fighting, and was rebuilt after the war just south-east of its prior location.
