Plot summary
Cat Among the Pigeons is set in the late 1950s at Meadowbank, an exclusive school for girls in the South of England run by its founder, Miss Bulstrode. The "cat" of the title is a murderer who, a few weeks after the commencement of the summer term, strikes for the first time, upsetting the quiet atmosphere of the school. It seems that there is a connection to Ramat, one of the richest countries of the Middle East, where a revolution has recently taken place, as the last remaining member of the royal dynasty, the 15 year-old Princess Shaista, is a new pupil at Meadowbank. However, Shaista remains unharmed, and the police have no clue as to the motive of the killing. Nor can they prevent the commitment of further crimes on the school premises.Only in the final third of the book does Hercule Poirot make an appearance. One morning he gets a visit from Julia Upjohn, one of Meadowbank's teenage students, who has found out something which she believes may endanger her life should it become public knowledge. Poirot soon finds himself on the trail of jewel thieves, smugglers, and murderers. He also finds out that the missing motive is quite different from what the police assumed.
