Cathays railway station
Encyclopedia : C : CA : CAT : Cathays railway station
Cathays is a small suburban station in Cardiff. The typical service combined service pattern is that trains running through here lead on to Barry Island, with the occasional service to Cardiff Bay.
The station in Cathays is located immediately North of the Cardiff University Students' Union building which the tracks run directly beneath. When it opened in 1982 it reversed a trend to close stations by being the first new station to be built in 60 years in the UK. The station car park is accessible from Senghennydd Road, a footbridge across the tracks leads to the down platform, with an exit to the civic centre onto Park Place.
During Monday-Saturday daytimes, there are usually six trains an hour from Cardiff Central to destinations including Pontypridd, Treherbert, Merthyr Tydfil and Aberdare. Some trains continue beyond Cardiff to Penarth or Barry Island.
