Cathy Jamieson, (Born 3 November 1956) is a Labour Member of the Scottish Parliament and has been the representative for Carrick, Cumnock and Doon Valley since 1999.
She was appointed Minister for Education and Young People in the Scottish Executive in 2001 and then Minister for Justice after the 2003 election.
She was educated at James Hamilton Academy in Kilmarnock. She obtained BA (Hons) in Fine Art at the Glasgow School of Art and a Higher National Diploma in Art at Goldsmiths College in London.
Trained as an art therapist, she has a certificate qualification in social work, a certificate in management, and has worked in local authority childcare social work, developing her career by working with young people at risk. She was principal officer of an advocacy organisation for young people in care. She was also a member of the Edinburgh inquiry into abuse in residential care and served on the management and advisory committees of several childcare agencies.
Ms Jamieson has in recent times used her ministerial position to promote legislation that would target many sadomasochists, fetishists and other legitimate sexual minorities by proposing to criminalise possession of so-called "Extreme Pornography".
Critics of her efforts maintain that any such move would be a clear violation of Human Rights under EU law, and would result in the persecution of disproportionately high numbers of the Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual community.
Her attempts to pass legislation in this regard are strongly opposed by a coalition of libertarian, free speech, and sexual minority action groups under the umbrella of the 'backlash' campaign.
Ms Jamieson is married and has one son.
