San Francisco State University’s student-run news Web site, Golden Gate [X]press Online, received the 2005 Online Pacemaker award for the second consecutive year. The Pacemaker is the highest honor for collegiate journalism, given annually by the Associated Collegiate Press to college newspapers, magazines and Web sites.
“Most student publications can deliver text stories pretty easily but we’re one in a few that deliver multimedia stories regularly,” said Andrew DeVigal, an assistant professor of journalism who serves as faculty adviser for the student-run publication.
Based in the SFSU Journalism Department, [X]press Online is the Web component of [X]press Publications, which publishes a weekly newspaper and monthly magazine. Thirty student editors, writers, designers and photographers produce the Web site.
The Pacemaker was awarded to [X]press Online for the 2004-05 academic year, for which journalism major Matias Cavallin served as managing editor.
“The No. 1 thing definitely that I enjoyed the most was working with other students,” said Cavallin, who graduated in 2004 and is working in an afterschool program in Hunters Point as he prepares for graduate school next year.
“I learned leadership skills. I found out that it takes a completely different person to go from a writer to being an editor,” he said.
[X]press Online’s current managing editor Angela Generoso, who worked on the award-winning Web site, agrees.
“When I first started working on the Web site,” she said, “I was excited because I knew all the technology. I didn’t realize it was all people management and working with people.”
