Cedar Falls is a city in Black Hawk County, Iowa and is home to one of Iowa's three Public Universities, the University of Northern Iowa. The population was 36,145 at the 2000 census. Its name comes from being on the Cedar River. It was originally named Sturgis Falls, after William Sturgis, the first permanent white settler.
Geography
Cedar Falls is located at (42.523520, -92.446402)[Geographic references#1GR1].According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 74.8 km² (28.9 mi²). 73.3 km² (28.3 mi²) of it is land and 1.5 km² (0.6 mi²) of it (2.04%) is water.
Demographics
As of the census[Geographic references#2GR2] of 2000, there were 36,145 people, 12,833 households, and 7,558 families residing in the city. The population density was 493.1/km² (1,277.2/mi²). There were 13,271 housing units at an average density of 181.1/km² (468.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 95.14% White, 1.57% Black or African American, 0.15% Native American, 1.61% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.41% from other races, and 1.09% from two or more races. 1.08% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.There were 12,833 households out of which 26.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.9% were married couples living together, 7.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 41.1% were non-families. 25.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.91.
In the city the population was spread out with 18.0% under the age of 18, 30.6% from 18 to 24, 20.5% from 25 to 44, 19.0% from 45 to 64, and 11.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 26 years. For every 100 females there were 88.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $40,226, and the median income for a family was $56,158. Males had a median income of $37,235 versus $26,312 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,140. About 5.6% of families and 16.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.5% of those under age 18 and 6.1% of those age 65 or over.
