Cedarburg is a city in Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 10,908 at the 2000 census. The city is located partially within the Town of Cedarburg.
Geography
Cedarburg is located at (43.29896, -87.987209)[Geographic references#1GR1].According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 9.6 km² (3.7 mi²). 9.6 km² (3.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it (1.08%) is water. And all located in Northern Ozaukee County.
Cedarburg
Cedarburg is a small suburb about 20 miles north of Milwaukee. The town is noted for its tourism industry, and prides itself on century-old buildings and small businesses. The community benefits from many parks as well as a general attempt to preserve green space, even in the downtown area. There is a strong sense of civic participation and community pride, which serves to make the city and surrounding countryside constantly more beautiful.Tourism
Cedarburg is a booming tourist community. The main street is lined with historic buildings occupied by independent businesses. Many of the businesses are small shops specializing in arts and crafts. Some notable businesses include a family-owned jeweler, Hoffman's Meat Market, several small coffee houses, Amy's Candy Kitchen (and other candy shops), and many resturaunts. The Rivoli, an historic single-screen theater is located in the center of the city. The Cedar Creek Winery, and the Woolen Mill in which it is located, are a popular stop in town. Both offer tours of the historic facilities; the Mill houses a variety of small shops in addition to the winery and Creme & Crepe Cafe. Cedarburg prides itself on its picturesque setting: well-maintained historic buildings, historic landmarks, and an abundance of churches. The town's appeal is also enhanced by its location alongside the calm waters of Cedar Creek.Throughout the year there are a number of festivals held in town, which cater to the tourists as well as citizens and local businesses. Some of the principal festivals include Harvest Fest, Strawberry Fest, Winter Fest, and Crazy Days. One can expect the city to be filled with crowds of people on those weekends, as the main street is converted into festival grounds. There is also a city festival known as "Maxwell Street Days" which is held four times during the summer months. It is in essence an enormous garage sale or flea market held on the Ozaukee County Fairgrounds, just up the road from downtown.
Demographics
The community, like many Wisconsin towns, is governed by a city government and a town government. These demographics relate to the city, not the town.As of the census[Geographic references#2GR2] of 2000, there were 10,908 people, 4,432 households, and 3,022 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,141.4/km² (2,960.1/mi²). There were 4,593 housing units at an average density of 480.6/km² (1,246.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.17% White, 0.25% Black or African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.73% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.13% from other races, and 0.58% from two or more races. 0.86% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 4,432 households out of which 35.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.6% were married couples living together, 7.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.8% were non-families. 28.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the city the population was spread out with 27.2% under the age of 18, 5.0% from 18 to 24, 29.4% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 91.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.6 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $56,431, and the median income for a family was $66,932. Males had a median income of $51,647 versus $30,979 for females. The per capita income for the city was $27,455. About 1.8% of families and 2.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.0% of those under age 18 and 3.6% of those age 65 or over. Tax in the city as well as the town of Cedarburg is high. The Real Estate market is also high here. It is hard to find a house for under $200,000.
The Town of Cedarburg is home to the only covered bridge remaining in the State of Wisconsin. The bridge is located on the north end of the town in Covered Bridge Park, near an area locally called "5 Corners". This area is called that because it is home to the 5-way intersection of Hwy 60, County NN, and Covered Bridge Road. The intersection is landmarked by 5 Corners Dodge, 5 Corners GMC, PDQ, Cedarburg Town Hall, and two resturaunts (Roadhouse and Wanye's Drive-In).
