Cenél Conaill

Encyclopedia : C : CE : CEN : Cenél Conaill

The Cenél Conaill is the name of the "kindred" or descendants of Conall Gulban, son of Niall Noígiallach, and who founded the kingdom of Tír Conaill (Tyrconnell) in the 5th century. It comprises much of what is now County Donegal, and several surrounding areas.

Conall Gulban was thus the ancestor of people such as Colum Cille; the Royal Dynastic House of O'Donnell of Tyrconnell, and its various members, such as Hugh Roe O'Donnell, Patrick Cardinal O'Donnell, the current incumbent in the line of Chiefs of the Name, Fr. Hugh O'Donel, O.F.M, and his Tánaiste, Hugo O'Donnell, Duke of Tetuan, and several others such as: the late Patrick Denis O'Donnell (writer and military historian); Rory Gallagher; Seán Doherty; Pat "the Cope" Gallagher; and Daniel O'Donnell (Irish singer), among many others.

Niall Noígiallach, died c. A.D.455.
