Centreville is a city in Bibb County, Alabama, United States. At the 2000 census the population was 2,466. The city is the county seat of Bibb County.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 25.1 km² (9.7 mi²). 24.7 km² (9.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it (1.75%) is water.
Demographics
As of the census[Geographic references#2GR2] of 2000, there were 2,466 people, 953 households, and 684 families residing in the city. The population density was 99.8/km² (258.5/mi²). There were 1,064 housing units at an average density of 43.1/km² (111.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 75.95% White, 23.03% Black or African American, 0.08% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.32% from other races, and 0.49% from two or more races. 1.74% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.There were 953 households out of which 31.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.3% were married couples living together, 15.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% were non-families. 26.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.98.
In the city the population was spread out with 24.6% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 24.9% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 87.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.8 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $31,842, and the median income for a family was $43,309. Males had a median income of $32,250 versus $21,654 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,449. About 14.0% of families and 19.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 29.8% of those under age 18 and 11.0% of those age 65 or over.
