The Centro Cultural de la Raza is a non-profit organization with the specific mission of highlighting Chicano, native Mexicano, Latin American and Indian art. Erected at San Diego, California's well known Balboa park, the Centro Cultural de la Raza's building is identifiable by a number of drawings painted by the building's main entrance.
History
In 1967, the Ballet Folklorico en Aztlan was formed. The dance group performed traditional Mexican dances and gave dacing class to aspiring dancers. In 1970, the Centro Cultural de la Raza first opened it's doors. Soon after, the Ballet Folklorico en Aztlan was adopted as the center's official performing group. The association between the center and the folk dance group has continued since.
Soon after, the Centro Cultural de la Raza began to expand; offering art and writing education, as well as auctions of paintings in order to raise funds for the cultural center.
The Centro Cultural de la Raza also opened a library, and became involved with the CEMA, an organization geared towards demonstrating the lives of minorities in the United States through art collections.
Dances practiced at the center
The Centro Cultural de la Raza currently has various dance groups, including Grupo Cosmos, Danza Coyolxauhqui and Ballet Folklorico Aztlan, which also operates a dance school. These dance groups are run by the romantic partner of the current Board President and one of her dancers. There were three other dance groups (all run by women) which operated at the Centro previous to the Boycott (see below) which were expelled from the Centro when a new administration admistration took over in 1999.External links
