Certified Novell Engineer

Encyclopedia : C : CE : CER : Certified Novell Engineer

A CNE (or Certified Netware Engineer) is a certification which is designed to certify that an individual possesses in-depth knowledge and skills related to administration and troubleshooting of the Novell Netware operating system.

Requirements

In contrast to a CNA (or Certified Netware Administrator), a CNE must pass a series of tests to prove their readiness for the certification. A CNA must pass a single test.

The Novell CNE training provides knowledge and skills implementing a sometimes wide variety of Novell (NetWare) products.

Recognition

While many in the industry have cynically compared the CNE cert to Microsoft's MCSE, the CNE testing & training differs in that they are decidedly more difficult and "Hands-on", akin to Red Hat's RHCE and Cisco's CCIE (albeit, as some people say, distantly).

Purpose

Specifically, the CNE training program is intended to train a System Administrator on how to use management tools, perform server installations, manage the NDS e-Directory, printing, allocate storage space, email & instant messaging services, and managing security.

Historical note

Originally CNE stood for Certified Netware Engineer then subsequently (when Unixware entered Novell's product range around 1993) it became Certified Novell Engineer.
