Chai Wan (柴灣, lit. firewood bay), formerly known as Sai Wan (西灣) mistakenly, is at east end of the urban area on the Hong Kong Island and next to Shau Kei Wan in Hong Kong. It formerly was a bay and the bay was gradually reclaimed. The land extended west near Lei Yue Mun in Heng Fa Chuen and east to Siu Sai Wan. The hills, Mount Collinsion and Pottinger Peak on her south and Mount Parker on her west, inhibit the town development.

The area is currently administrated in Eastern District, with mosaic of industrial and residental area. The town is with a population 186,505 at the year of 2001.

Shek O Country Park is at the south of Chai Wan.

History

Chai Wan was formerly known as Sai Wan (西灣). At the beginning of the 18th century, there were six villages there: Dai Ping Village, Law Uk, Luk Uk, Nam Uk, Sai Village, Sing Uk.

In 1845, the British military built a fort and a barrack there.

In 1929, the Boy Scouts Association, Hong Kong Branch purchased a land for Chai Wan Campsite where Chai Wan Park is now situated. The land returned to Hong Kong Government for the urban development in early 1970s.

In 1952, the government built low-cost housing and gradully replacing rural villages in the area.

Culture

The Law Uk Folk Museum was formerly a village and now is the museum, a branch of the Hong Kong Museum of History.

Transportation

The area is served by the MTR Chai Wan Station, which is the eastern terminus of Island Line. There is another station, Heng Fa Chuen Station, at Heng Fa Chuen.
