Chamdo (Tibetan: ཆབ་མདོ་; Wylie: chab-mdo also written Qamdo) is a town in the eastern Tibetan Autonomous Region, located about 480km from Lhasa.[link] The occupation of Chamdo by the military of the People's Republic of China on October 19, 1950 served as an important precursor to the eventual defeat of the Lhasa government. Chamdo's governor at the time of the occupation was Ngabo Ngawang Jigme, who later became an official in the government of the People's Republic of China.
