Chaminade High School is a Roman Catholic high school for boys located in Mineola, Long Island, New York. In 1930, Alexander Ott, S.M., a member of the Society of Mary, founded the school.
The school, with a student population of 1600, has a faculty comprised of both lay and religious faculty. Students follow a college preparatory liberal studies curriculum, including four years of Religion, English, Social Studies, Foreign Language (French, German, Latin or Spanish), Mathematics, Science, and Physical Education, as well as two years of Fine Arts and one year of Health.
During senior year, qualified students have the opportunity, for an additional fee, to enroll in a full year of collegiate study. Professors from Long Island University directly teach at the school. Over 99% of Chaminade graduates attend college. [link]
An extensive selection of extracircular activities bolsters Chaminade's outstanding academic program. A majority of the students partake in one or more school activities and more than half participate on interscholastic athletic teams.[[Citing sources citation needed]]
Athletics
Chaminade facilities include a pool that is smaller than an Olympic-size indoor swimming pool and a retreat house. The pool actually measures 25 m. All students must complete a Columbia-esque physical education requirement which includes an arduous swim test.Chaminade is a member of the CHSAA.
Over the years Chaminade athletic teams have established top programs in baseball, crew, cross country, track & field, swimming, soccer, tennis, basketball, volleyball, wrestling, and lacrosse.
Former linebacker and runningback of the Detroit Lions, Steven Boyd (1995-2002; jersey number 53) works at Chaminade High School as a part of their Physical Education department and a coach of their varsity football team.
Notes
Chaminade is also known for its academic rigor and its success in forensics. The Robert C. Wright Speech and Debate Team dominates Long Island's Forensic League and has been a regular feature on the national debate circuit. On November 29, 2005, Chaminade cancelled its junior prom and senior prom Chaminade's president, Father James Williams, said in a letter to parents that "It's all the over-the-topness that takes place -- who has the biggest limo, who has the most elaborate weekend planned -- that the prom is no longer the focus."[link] This decision is identical to Kellenberg Memorial High School's which it made in September, 2005. A substitute for the proms was later announced.
