- Chamorro is a Spanish surname. The Chamorros have been an important political family in Nicaragua from the 1800s to the present, beginning with Fruto Chamorro. Violeta Chamorro, widow of assassinated Pedro Joaquín Chamorro, was the president of Nicaragua from 1990 to 1996 and is probably the most famous member of the family, as well as being the first woman president on the continent of North America.
