High School Mascot
[Champlain Valley Union High School], located in Hinesburg, Vermont had created controversy because their school's mascot was the Crusaders. Some argued that the name Crusaders is an important school tradition. Others saw it as a symbol of religious oppression. On June 14, 2005, the School Board decided to pick a new name for the school’s teams by fall.Alternative names: Redhawks, Bobcats, Dhimmis, and Red Wolves were suggested for their team's name.
The school board decided to go with Redhawks, despite an overwhelming student vote to retain the Crusader mascot.
