Charles Robberts Swart (1894 - 1982) was the last Governor-General of the Union of South Africa and the first State President of the Republic of South Africa.
A longtime National Party politician, he was appointed Governor General in 1959. After whites voted in the 1960 South Africa referendum to sever South Africa's links with the British monarchy, Swart was chosen to be the Republic's first State President in 1961. This convention became common in other former Commonwealth Realms. Swart held this new office until 1967.
