Charlie (Street Fighter)
Encyclopedia : C : CH : CHA : Charlie (Street Fighter)
First Lieutenant Charlie (Nash in Japan) is a video game character from Capcom's Street Fighter series of fighting games.
Story
Because his death in Street Fighter Alpha 2 was retconned, Charlie is the only SFA2 character "unaccounted for."In Street Fighter Alpha 3, Charlie's drug-trafficking investigations led to an entity called Shadoloo. He tried to bring this to his superiors, but they buried the investigation. On his own, Charlie teamed up with Interpol special agent Chun-Li to take down Shadoloo. Because the army brass was on the take from Shadoloo, they sent Guile to stop him. Charlie and Chun-Li had just found Shadoloo's ringleader, M. Bison, when Guile showed up. Guile won the match, but Charlie convinced his friend to help him stop Bison and his secret weapon, the Psycho Drive-which would have granted the dictator unlimited power. Charlie and Guile went for the Psycho Drive while Chun-Li planted explosives around the base. Bison attacked Charlie and Guile-being enhanced by the Psycho Drive he would have obliterated Guile with a Psycho Crusher, had Charlie not grabbed him in the middle of it. Charlie struggled with Bison and ordered Guile and Chun-Li to get out. They escaped and watched as Shadoloo's headquarters exploded, with Charlie and Bison inside it.
Charlie is presumed killed in action.
Appearance
His distinguishing feature is a large forelock of blond hair. His style differentiates himself from Guile because he only uses one arm to perform the Sonic Boom and performs the Somersault Kick backwards.Trivia
- In his X-Men vs. Street Fighter ending, Charlie is captured by M. Bison and experimented upon. In Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter, Charlie makes an appearance as a secret character named Shadow, who appears to be darkened like Akuma. He also has a new super move which sends his opponent by his uppercut into the air, then he pursues the opponent and the screen will go white and all can be seen is just some little explosions, like the Shun Goku Satsu.
- *However, in Marvel vs. Capcom, Charlie makes an appearance as a Secret Assistant who helps the fighter by doing Hyper Somersault Strikes. It is known in the Chun-Li's ending that he is free of Shadoloo, although with such body. He helps Chun-Li from being brainwashed by Bison. Alternatively, he, together with Shadow Lady (alternate form of Chun-Li), team up to fight the crime of Shadoloo, and helps the heavily injured Jin Saotome by turning him into a Shadow like themselves.
- *Although this subplot is only used in the Marvel vs. Capcom series, it has become a part of Street Fighter fanon, and Shadow makes an appearance in the UDON Street Fighter comic.
- For a long time, it was believed that Nash was Charlie's last name. However, Capcom has confirmed that it isn't. Despite this, some fans still combine his American and Japanese names, as well as licences such as the UDON comic.
- Charlie doesn't actually need to wear glasses; requiring glasses would render him unfit for piloting an aircraft. However, he likes to wear them purely for the style.
- Charlie throws his Sonic Boom projectile with one arm, rather than two like Guile. Charlie is also able to throw multiple Sonic Booms in succession for his Sonic Break super move, including using his leg to create a Sonic Boom. This indicates his mastery of the move. Charlie performs his Somersault Kick backwards, and it hits twice instead of once, making it stronger than Guile's. Guile actually learned these attacks from Charlie and was still working on them during Street Fighter Alpha 3. This explains why Guile's attacks were so much weaker in the game (for example, Guile's Sonic Boom inflicted 1 point of damage, making it on par with chip damage).
- His tendency to die in most of his endings is a source of alternating humor and irritation for fans of Street Fighter's convoluted plot, reflecting the "retelling" nature of each game in the Street Fighter Alpha series. Guile's ending in Street Fighter Alpha 3 is generally seen as the most accurate one for the reason that it is the most current retelling of Charlie's death.
- In the Street Fighter movie the characters of Charlie and Blanka are combined. He is warped by Dr. Dhalsim. To explain that they are the same character, his full name in the movie is Carlos "Charlie" Blanka.
- In Guile's ending in Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Charlie's tombstone can be seen.
- In the anime series Street Fighter II V, Charlie sported an entirely different design due to the fact that he had been mentioned several times in the Street Fighter II series, but was not actually seen.
- In one episode of the American Street Fighter cartoon (based off the live-action movie), Blanka (in the movie, Charlie and Blanka are the same person) reverts back to his human form. His appearance is more similar to the Charlie portrayed in the movie, but the extra clothes he wears in the episode is more similar to the clothes Charlie wears in the Alpha series.
- Charlie was the previous winner of the US Martial Arts tournament that Ken won.
- Out of all the deaths Charlie has suffered throughout the series, UDON chose to use a combination of his "Alpha 2" and "Alpha 3" endings. After regaining his memory as Shadow, Charlie is shot by a helicopter, but survives long enough to engage M.Bison in one last battle, killing himself and critically injuring Bison in the process.
