A major figure in the 1996 U.S. campaign finance scandal, Yah Lin "Charlie" Trie was convicted and sentenced to three years probation and four months home detention for violating federal campaign finance laws by making political contributions in someone else's name and by causing a false statement to be made to the Federal Election Commission (FEC).["Fund-raiser Charlie Trie pleads guilty under plea agreement"], CNN.com, May 21, 1999
Born in Taiwan, Trie emigrated to the United States in 1974. Immediately after the donating $460,000 to U.S. President Clinton's legal defense fund in March 1996["The Exploits of Charlie Trie"], Washington Post, Aug. 3, 1997, Trie sent a letter to President Clinton that expressed concern about America's intervention in tensions arising from China's military exercises being conducted near Taiwan. Trie told the President in his letter that war with China was a possibility should U.S. intervention continue:
