Chemical dependency

A chemical dependency is such a strong dependency on a substance that it becomes necessary to have this substance just to function properly. The need of a substance is developed from abusing it. The drug rarely becomes necessary to one's survival, but some drug withdrawal processes can indeed be fatal.
