Chevrolet Prizm

Encyclopedia : C : CH : CHE : Chevrolet Prizm

The Chevrolet Prizm was a compact sedan sold by Chevrolet from 1998 through 2002. It was a rebadged version of the Toyota Corolla, replacing the similar Geo Prizm, which itself replaced the Toyota-based 1988 Chevrolet Nova. The car slotted between the Metro and the Cavalier in the Chevrolet lineup. All of the aforementioned models except for the Metro and Cavalier were produced at NUMMI (New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc), a joint venture between General Motors and Toyota, located in Fremont, California. Therefore, it was a United States-only vehicle.

Features

Equipped with Toyota's 1.8 L 1ZZ-FE 4-cylinder engine with VVT-i, the Prizm was very economical, able to maintain fuel economy of 32 city/37 highway.

The vehicle had a very simple instrument panel, consisting of only a oil temperature gauge, speedometer, fuel gauge, and digital odometer with two trip settings. Various "idiot lights", or indicators were also in this panel.

Many reasons why the Prizm was discontinued shortly after its introduction as a Chevrolet model may be its redundancy. It was shorter than the Cavalier; also, it was more expensive than the Cavalier. As a result, many customers were willing to save the money and get more space and comfort by purchasing the Cavalier. In addition, GM wanted to utilize its production capacity at NUMMI to build the new Pontiac Vibe, a sister car of the Corolla-based Toyota Matrix.
