Choctaw is a growing suburban town in Oklahoma County, Oklahoma and is part of the Oklahoma City Metropolitan Area. The population was 9,377 at the 2000 census.
While Choctaw is located in the geographic center of Eastern Oklahoma County, it enjoys relative prosperity on the fringes of the urbanized eastern edge of Oklahoma City. Affordable housing, excellent schools, and Oklahoma City accessibility makes this quite residential suburb a very desirable place to live. With several hundred new homes being built or planned for in the near future, the demand for retail stores, restaurants and services is eminent. The possibilities of future commercial growth in Choctaw are unending. Choctaw is proud of its past, but is focusing on its future.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 70.2 km² (27.1 mi²). 70.1 km² (27.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it (0.07%) is water.
Demographics
As of the census[Geographic references#2GR2] of 2000, there were 9,377 people, 3,450 households, and 2,808 families residing in the city. The population density was 133.7/km² (346.4/mi²). There were 3,617 housing units at an average density of 51.6/km² (133.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 88.80% White, 1.64% African American, 3.70% Native American, 0.62% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.85% from other races, and 4.32% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.79% of the population.There were 3,450 households out of which 35.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.0% were married couples living together, 9.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 18.6% were non-families. 16.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.69 and the average family size was 2.99.
In the city the population was spread out with 25.9% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 27.3% from 45 to 64, and 10.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 96.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.1 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $49,291, and the median income for a family was $55,437. Males had a median income of $36,540 versus $27,914 for females. The per capita income for the city was $21,041. About 3.7% of families and 5.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.0% of those under age 18 and 6.1% of those age 65 or over.
