History
From its early inception in 1990, Chuang Yi positioned itself as a company specializing in manga (Japanese comic book) publication, a medium of expression generally disparaged by most Singaporeans then. The company's main objective was to expose the local populace to this storytelling art form, having recognized its popularity in a number of Asian countries like Japan, Hong Kong and Taiwan, and its potential to take off with equal fervor in a similar market such as Singapore.Over the years, Chuang Yi made gradual but definite steps towards its goal of promoting this “manga culture." Response to several of her flagship titles like Dragonball, Slam Dunk, and Tian Long Ba Bu convinced the company that both manga and comics could carve a niche for themselves in local reading tastes. To further fuel this uptrend, artists were specially invited over to Singapore to grace local book events and autograph sessions. Inoue Takehiko's visit in 1997 during the peak of Slam Dunk's popularity was a tremendous hit with the readers, culminating in a television interview that created a buzz in the local manga scene, gaining this medium even more fans and supporters.
When the Pokémon phenomenon began to make its presence felt worldwide during 1998, this shift of interest "westward" created the perfect catalyst for manga influence among the English-educated population, prompting the company to branch out from Chinese manga into the then-virtually untapped English-speaking market. The overwhelming response to several Pokémon manga titles launched later that year also sealed a permanent manga presence among this new group of readers, hence encouraging the company to increase its range of titles to cater to this demographic.
Having secured its place as the Number One (and only) manga publisher based in Singapore, Chuang Yi proceeded to expand its operations to include other forms of literature, magazines and merchandise. A range of its manga tiles have since also been licensed for distribution in Australia, New Zealand and Philippines, with the company’s latest venture into India.
Today, Chuang Yi continues to grow from strength to strength, reaching out to its fans both locally and beyond its shores.
