Chubutodyptes
Encyclopedia : C : CH : CHU : Chubutodyptes
Chubutodyptes is a monotypic genus of penguin which is known from fossils. It was named after 2 characteristic humeri (AMNH 3341 and 3346) (Simpson 1946) from the Early Miocene Patagonian Molasse Formation which were found near Gaiman in Chubut Province, Argentina. It contains a single species, C. biloculata, which was the size of a small Gentoo Penguin.
In 2004, it has been suggested that the genus might be sunk into the closely related genus Palaeospheniscus, the species becoming P. biloculatus.
