Cincinnatus is a town in Cortland County, New York, USA. The population was 1,051 at the 2000 census. The town is named after an important Roman general, Cincinnatus.

The Town of Cincinnatus is in the southwest part of the county.

History

The region was part of the Central New York Military Tract used to pay soldiers of the American Revolution.

The town was first settled around 1795. It was one of the original six town of Cortland County. The town was formed from the Town of Solon in 1804.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 66.0 km² (25.5 mi²). 65.9 km² (25.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it (0.20%) is water.

The east town line is the border of Chenango County, New York.

The Otselic River flows through the town.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 1,051 people, 418 households, and 282 families residing in the town. The population density was 16.0/km² (41.3/mi²). There were 453 housing units at an average density of 6.9/km² (17.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.00% White, 0.19% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.29% from other races, and 1.33% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.09% of the population.

There were 418 households out of which 29.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% were married couples living together, 8.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.3% were non-families. 26.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 2.98.

In the town the population was spread out with 25.2% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 26.8% from 45 to 64, and 14.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 90.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $37,014, and the median income for a family was $44,375. Males had a median income of $27,222 versus $21,304 for females. The per capita income for the town was $18,345. About 4.5% of families and 7.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.3% of those under age 18 and 7.8% of those age 65 or over.
