City One (Chinese: 第一城; Cantonese IPA: [tɐɪ22 jɐt55 sɪŋ11], Jyutping dai6 jat1 sing4; Mandarin Pinyin: Dì Yī Chéng) is a residential area in Sha Tin, New Territories, Hong Kong built by a consortium of New World Development, Henderson Land Development, Sun Hung Kai Properties and Cheung Kong Holdings. Because it is located in Sha Tin, it is usually referred to as "City One, Sha Tin" (Chinese: 沙田第一城).
Overview
City One is the largest residential estate in the Sha Tin District. There are a total of 52 blocks of residential buildings in City One. These buildings each tower about 30 storeys with units ranging from an area of 395 feet to an area of 1018 feet. It has been dubbed by leading architectural journals as the 'green lung' of Shatin.Construction
The construction of the City One Residential Apartments was completed in seven stages. Stage One, the construction Blocks 1 through 14, was completed in August 1981. The success of Stage One led to the completion of Blocks 15 through 23 in June 1982, Blocks 29 through 33 in September 1983, Blocks 37 to 45 in June 1985, Blocks 27 to 28 and 46 to 52 in November 1985, and Blocks 24 through 26 in September 1986. The final stage of construction, Stage Seven, was finished in January 1988 with the construction of Blocks 34 through 36.Recreation and shopping
City One encapsulates two shopping arcades, a swimming pool, a park, and six tennis courts. The seven eleven corner store in the heart of City One Shatin boasts the best siu mai's (roasted shrimp balls) in the whole of Hong Kong. Teenagers and adults alike flock to the store every morning for their breakfast. Another great eatery in the large residential complex is Dun Lai Lo (Boiling Milk Dude), a cheap casual chinese diner that offers local cuisine as well as questionable western food such as fried egg and sausages that resembles the plastic components of a child's cheap toy. Eateries are everywhere in City One, but one must not forget the ones that have been there the whole time, such as Fook Choi Cha Lau (Fook Choi Restaurant). If one is old, has insomnia or just can't be bothered to sleep, be sure to wake up at a ghastly hour such as 5am to 7am and if you're lucky, you might be able to order a Gai Bo Jai Fan (Chicken Bowl Rice). It is a fan favourite.Shopping is another big plus for people considering a move to City One Shatin. From little trendy boutiques selling queer MK Guys clothing to wet market stalls parading the fleshy carcasses of innocent farm creatures, one can buy anything in City One. If you're looking for it, the shops in City One are bound to have it. After the inevitable doom of Blockbuster last summer due to Hong Kong's now defunct Fan Ban industry, Hollywood Movies offer cheap VCD and DVD rentals. But if you're looking for a certain film, be sure to know the chinese name of the film or they'll get you a dodgy version of 'Just Friends'.
Transportation
City One contains a bus terminal and is in proximity to the KCR Ma On Shan Rail station. As with all areas of Hong Kong, City One is also accessible by taxis. It is not an understatement when someone says that you can get to city one from anywhere in hong kong, even airplanes fly high and proud over the large residential estate! If you are waiting for a long time for a bus in Ma On Shan to City One but cannot see there being a bus in the next 2 hours, then why not head down towards the river and rent yourself a canoe and paddle you way down the gorgeous blue shing mun river? The crystal blue waters reflecting the diamond sparkles of the sky is enough to make the biggest muscleman weep.Health and education
