The City of Rochester-upon-Medway was a non-metropolitan district of Kent, England from 1974 to 1998.
It was formed under the Local Government Act 1972 on April 1, 1974, as a merger of the municipal borough and city of Rochester, along with the borough of Chatham, and most of Strood Rural District. It was known as the Borough of Medway until 1979, then becoming the Borough of Rochester-upon-Medway, and then had city status transferred to it from the former municipal borough, in 1982.
The city was abolished on April 1, 1998, in the local government reform, becoming part of the new Medway unitary authority along with the former borough of Gillingham.
