Clacton Town F.C. are a football club based in Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, England. They were the founder members of the Eastern Counties Football League in 1935. In the 1960-61 season, they reached the First Round Proper of the FA Cup. They are currently members of the Eastern Counties Football League Division One.
History
Formed in 1892, Clacton Town's first match in a suitably affiliated competition had to wait until 1894. Clacton joined the North East Essex League for the 1895-96 season and won its first title, the Second Division championship, in 1899. However, the club was forced into a state of suspended animation sometime in the 1900-01 season, with many players deserting to form a new club, Old Clactonians. The stagnation of the original club continued, and in 1905 Old Clactonians agreed to change their name to Clacton Town, and the new look CTFC moved to a new site on Old Road in 1906.In the 1911-12 season, Clacton became founder members of the Essex and Suffolk Border League. They remained in this league until 1935-36, when they were again founder members of the Eastern Counties League.
1947-48 saw Clacton turn professional, but the club stayed where they were in the Eastern Counties League until 1958, when they joined the Southern League. Here they set a league record in 1959-60, heading the league throughout the season and, of course, winning the title. The following season saw Clacton's best ever FA Cup run, reaching the 1st round proper. This success did not last, and in 1972, Clacton were forced back to amateur status and the Eastern Counties League in order to ensure the club's survival.
After over 80 years at Old Road, the club were obliged to The Rush Green Bowl in 1987, with the ground being sold for redevelopment by the local council. After a long stretch in the Eastern Counties League First Division, Clacton won promotion in 1995 to the Premier Division. After relegation in 1997-98 Clacton were bought out, and their Premier League status was established, winning the First Division at the first attempt. Clacton had re-established themselves at this level, but off the pitch troubles loomed with the ownership changing hands 3 times in 4 years. This turbulence led to financial difficulties and the departure of a manager and a slew of players. Clacton finished 2005-06 at the bottom of the Premier Division with an undeniably terrible return of a solitary point and a goal difference of -159. Despite this Clacton avoided relegation to the First Division thanks to both AFC Sudbury and Bury Town being promoted to the Isthmian League Division One North.
