Classical ballet is a dance to classical music. It requires many years of training in form and technique The proper dress is tights and leotard, with an optional skirt. The dancer wears soft technique shoes until their bones are strong enough and they have trained for long enough to wear pointe shoes. The bones in their ankles and feet must be strong to go on pointe.

Classical ballet is based on the steps, positions and body carriage that originated before the 20th century. Classical ballets are dance performances that were choreographed before the 20th century.

There are six styles of training in classical ballet, the most common being Vaganova, Chechetti, Royal, and Balanchine.
