Shirky's Law

This is an observation originally made about the Blogosphere by Clay Shirky [link] that has been adaged by Hugh MacLeod [link] as:
:Equality, fairness, opportunity: pick two.

Examples

Although coined to explain the Zipf distribution of blog attention, it is trivial to expand the law to other systems. For example, in economic systems:
Fairness and Opportunity
Capitalism, which will always have inequal distribution of wealth.
Equality and Fairness
Communism, which must not allow opportunities for inequality.
Equality and Opportunity
Socialism, which allows competition, but unfairly (see Libertarianism) redistributes the wealth of successful participants.
