Shirky's Law
This is an observation originally made about the Blogosphere by Clay Shirky [link] that has been adaged by Hugh MacLeod [link] as:- :Equality, fairness, opportunity: pick two.
Examples
Although coined to explain the Zipf distribution of blog attention, it is trivial to expand the law to other systems. For example, in economic systems:- Fairness and Opportunity
- Capitalism, which will always have inequal distribution of wealth.
- Equality and Fairness
- Communism, which must not allow opportunities for inequality.
- Equality and Opportunity
- Socialism, which allows competition, but unfairly (see Libertarianism) redistributes the wealth of successful participants.
