Usage in entertainment
The term is known as a popular culture reference in most uses. The concept has made its way from television comedies to books and newspapers.
- Marlon Brando and Donald Cammell's book Fan Tan contains, as New York Times book reviewer Joe Queenan describes, "a few ribald scenes - one where the heroine has defecated on the hero's chest," which is what is typically described as a steamer.
- The band Tenacious D mentions the act in the song "Rock Your Socks". They have also sold mock baseball jerseys at concerts for the fictitious "Cleveland Steamers" baseball team, sporting the player number 666.
- In the Family Guy episode "Mr. Saturday Knight", Peter Griffin becomes a prostitute. While he is standing on a street corner, his wife Lois drives by and stops at a traffic light. He propositions her, then asks her if she'd like a Cleveland steamer.
- The Bob & Tom Show have a song called the Cleveland Steamer on their album Mad Armenians. It references many different slang terms for sexual acts.
- Although not referred to by name, the act of a Cleveland steamer is mentioned several times in the film Not Another Teen Movie.
