Clonycavan Man
Encyclopedia : C : CL : CLO : Clonycavan Man
Clonycavan Man is the name given to a well-preserved Iron Age bog body found in Clonycavan, County Meath, Ireland in March 2003. He is approximately 5'2" (1.57m) in height, and remarkable for the "gel" in his hair.
He had a squashed nose and crooked teeth. Pores are visible on the nose, and he had a thin beard.
One of the most fanciful theories was that he was in fact an Egyptian who had been ritually castrated. Later examination, however, revealed that, though shrunken by the mummification, the Clonycavan Man did in fact possess a penis.[[Citing sources citation needed]]
He is in display in the National Museum of Ireland in Dublin.
Clonycavan Man's death
The Clonycavan Man is believed to have been murdered, upon examination of the evidence found on his body. His skull had been split open by an implement believed to be an axe and there is a scar on his cheekbone. Scientists have dated his death to between 392 BC and 201 BC during the Iron Age, making him around 2300 years old. The Clonycavan Man was also fairly young at the time of his death.
Clonycavan Man's hair
The most distinguishing feature of the man was his hair, which was in a "raised"Mohawk Hairstyle with the help of hair gel: a unique find, considering the body dates from the Iron Age. The gel was made of plant oil and pine resin, imported from south-western France or Spain. This demonstrates that trade between Ireland and southern Europe happened almost 2,300 years ago. This also suggests he was wealthy, as few others would have been able to buy imported cosmetics.
