Clough Head

Encyclopedia : C : CL : CLO : Clough Head

Clough Head is the northermost fell of the Helvellyn range in the eastern part of the English Lake District, lying north of Great Dodd.

It is the lowest of the range, and from most directions it consists of rounded grassy slopes. Only the northwest side, above the village of Threlkeld, does Clough Head present a steep face, lying above a large, natural amphitheatre. On the western side of the fell is a route named Fisher Wife's rake, which passes Wanthwaite Crags, although this is not for the casual walker.

An old route, marked on maps as "Old Coach Road" crosses the northeastern slopes of Clough Head, reaching a high point of 437 m as it crosses from St John's in the Vale to Matterdale.

Clough Head is often climbed as part of a longer traverse of the Helvellyn range peaks. From the northeast there is a path avoiding the crags to the summit; alternatively one may follow the Coach Road to its highpoint, before heading southwest to the summit. The summit provides a good view of Blencathra to the north, in fact Alfred Wainwright drew himself admiring this view in his Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells.
