Cobra unit
Encyclopedia : C : CO : COB : Cobra unit
The Cobra unit, also called the Cobras, is a fictional special forces unit in the video game .
The unit was formed by The Boss in 1942 to combat the Axis Powers. It was created using the resources of the United States, Soviet Union and China, under The Philosophers. It consisted of the best soldiers from the Allied nations. The Cobra unit took part in a number of important missions throughout the war, including the D-Day invasion of Normandy. They are credited with leading the Allies to victory.
The unit consisted of six members, identified by their codenames:
- The Boss a.k.a. The Joy
- The Sorrow
- The Pain
- The Fury
- The Fear
- The End
The Boss disbanded the unit in 1947 and she and the other members seemingly went their separate ways and returned to their respective countries.
In 1962, The Boss was forced to kill The Sorrow when she was sent on a mission to Tselinoyarsk. Despite them having been in love, she had to kill him in order to fulfill her mission. The Sorrow understood this, and encouraged her to "complete her mission".
In 1964, after apparently defecting to the Soviet Union, The Boss reassembled the remaining Cobras. Naked Snake eventually defeated each of them in single combat during the course of , and with the final loss of their leader, the group ceased to exist.
A peculiar trait in this unit is the fact that when Snake defeated a member, they would blow themselves up, via a minibomb. This is fail-safe in case they were captured by the enemy. There are exceptions to this. The Sorrow does not use such explosives (his body can be seen in an R1 first person view sequence after Snake has bandaged himself up at the end of the Virtuous Mission), and The Boss presumably does not do this either, although the area where her body was located was later heavily bombed by a group of MIGs.
(Note: The bosses blowing up after being killed is actually reminiscent of Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, in which every boss, including Gray Fox & Big Boss, blew up when they died.)
