College of the Desert (or COD) is a public two-year community college located in Palm Desert in the Coachella Valley of Riverside County, California. The current enrollment of COD is about 9,200 (with 2,400 full-time students).
The college offers a variety of A.A. degree and certificate programs, including programs related to golf course management and maintenance. COD is also the home of the Coachella Valley Campus of California State University, San Bernardino, as well as the Energy Technology Training Center, nationally recognized as a leader in alternative fuel training and a model for nine other community college alternative-fuel training programs throughout California.
The college's beginnings date back to 1958, when voters in the Coachella Valley approved the formation of a junior college district, with the first classes being held on its newly built 160 acre (647,000 m²) site in 1962.
In 1966, residents of the high desert north of the Coachella Valley voted to join the college district, leading in 1984 to the opening of the Copper Mountain Campus in Twentynine Palms. In 1999, the Copper Mountain Campus split off to become the independent Copper Mountain College.
